Fall Art Show Artist Statement: I wanted to create this piece to show a modern set that would include lean lines, and details. The vases feature monochromatic colors that tie together the set to incorporate each vase into the next. I wanted the vases to show similarity to each other, but also differences such as their different heights. I completely hand built my set by scoring and slipping each layer of the wall to get the vases to varying heights. I did the same process of scoring and slipping the balls one by one, alternating the placement of each one. I wanted to create my set to show how people are different from each other, but they also have similarities to each other no matter how polar opposite they are. This set showed me that through the challenges and self-doubt I was able to create a ceramics that I were proud of. This semester has helped me grow and understand that I am capable of building new skills that I didn’t think I was capable of having, and everyone should try an activity that is outside of their comfort zone.
In the above pictures, is my planter. I had adjusted my vision throughout the process, because my beginning colors were blue and grey. However, as I went along I did not like the colors together, so I chose to do a black glaze to create a more modernized planter. I created my planter my hand-building, trimming, and under-glazing. Overall I was happy with the outcome, however I would change my planter to be more symmetrical in the future.
